HOW TO GET MOTIVATED WHEN YOU’RE NOT.
I wish there was a magic wand we could wave to keep us enthusiastic, motivated and on track towards our goals. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed every day! Yay!
We all feel lazy, down and bored at times. We promise ourselves we’ll do things we know work… and then don’t. We hit the wall, a slump, the doldrums. We don’t train. We stuff our faces with cake. We sulk.
The only thing to do to perk ourselves up is just do it, as simple and fiendishly hard as that can be. Feelings follow actions. Do something and you start to feel a bit better. Walk to the gym and you may give yourself enough oomph to get on the cross trainer. Do 5 minutes. Then see if you can do another 5.
You run a marathon one step at a time. You may feel like quitting every couple of minutes, but you set ridiculously small goals - ‘I’ll just get to that next lamp post…’
The wonderful thing is that endorphins created when you start to exercise can be a kind of magic wand. They take your mind off pain and exhaustion. They cheer you up.
Endorphins make getting up at 8am to exercise on a Saturday morning worthwhile - ask the dozens of people who come to my 9am Factory HIIT class why they do it and how it makes them feel. They’re not masochists. They’re not superhuman. They’re like you and me. They sometimes go out on Friday night and get wrecked. And still stagger in the next morning. (I don’t recommend this, but it happens!)
So, if you want motivation, take one small step towards it.
If you want to know more about motivation, come to the Factory Fit Club on Wednesdays at 6.45 - before the class starts, I’m there to help you achieve your goals.
