BODY IMAGE – THE BAD NEWS
61% of women said they felt inadequate after looking at images of ‘perfect’ bodies in the media.
48% of teenage girls are already considering cosmetic surgery. If you have daughters, nieces, young friends, they’ll look to you to give them body confidence.
Body image can become more negative in ‘body focused’ situations – eg at the gym (so this is the lion’s den!)
You can pick up negative body images from bullying trainers, insensitive trainers, or those with low self-esteem – (something I’m working on!)
Your mother may have passed on her low self-esteem &/ or a sense of shame in your body. (My poor mother was raised by nuns - they made her feel as if she carried Eve’s ‘original sin’!)
I have worked on magazines for 25 years. ALL photos have good lighting, good make-up & airbrushing. The images ARE NOT REAL!
Apart from the odd Dove campaign, there are few images of ‘average’ looking, ‘average’ sized men or women in the media. There are even fewer ‘ordinary’ people – they’re all models and actors, trained to appear super confident, even if they aren’t.
They are even fewer positive role models for older women.
THE GOOD NEWS?
You can change this! You may not be able to change the images, but you can change the way you feel about them/
