OUT WITH THE OLD… IN WITH THE NEW YOU!
Psychologists, life coaches and experts in Feng Shui (that ancient Chinese art of furniture arranging!) all agree that clearing out old stuff makes way for the new.
A physical blitz of your environment – getting rid of junk food, clearing the cupboards of temptations and streamlining your wardrobe - can all help reinforce your commitment to your fitness goals by doing away with distractions.
Psychologists say this is a great way to give yourself a boost and free up energy. Feng shui practitioners say the same thing on a spiritual level.
Doing the housework also burns calories.
So why wait for a Spring Clean?
WARDROBE CLEAROUTS – Clothes are an expression of how you feel about yourself. If you live in baggy, shapeless, dull colours, or ill-fitting items, (as Gok Wan might say) ‘What does that say about you, girlfriend?’
Get rid of any clothes that make you feel frumpy, guilty (because they don’t fit, don’t suit you, or were an expensive mistake) or miserable.
If you can afford to, treat yourself to something that fits well - at the weight and shape you are right now.
Don’t wait until you’re at your ideal weight to start feeling good about yourself.
See how people respond to you when you dress to express the best of yourself.
HOME CLEAROUTS - Making space for the new you is like a physical affirmation of what’s to come. De-cluttering your living space can also de-clutter your mind – leaving you feeling freer and, yes, lighter.
As well as clothes, clear out any old books, ornaments, old equipment and anything else you no longer need or use. Give it to friends and family, charity shops or recycle/ ‘freecycle’.
MENTAL CLEAROUTS – Try the Thought Spring Clean. Scribble down all your negative thoughts: ‘The “Ifs…” the “Buts…” the “I can’t …” excuses & all the judgements about yourself ‘I’m stupid, lazy, not good enough.. etc’ - then rip them up, burn them, or chuck them in the bin.
