Be honest, we’d all like a quick fix. If I had a magic wand, of course I’d wave it and make our fitness goals materialise without sweating for Britain. One of my fave Fit Club memories is Lydia wailing, ‘Why can’t I just take a pill! It’s soooo hard!’ during a session.
So, for that naughty part in us all that wants a short-cut, here you go…
Fake tan – makes you look temporarily slimmer & healthier. DRAWBACK – you’ve seen some of my tie-die efforts! You can also smell a bit odd. And your bed looks like you’ve had a nasty accident.
Spanx pants/ Gok Wan undercrackers – anything that pulls you up & in like old fashioned girdles. DRAWBACK – You try getting them off at the end of an evening! They make you sweat. They’re not sexy. Also, where the garment ends, there’s an over-stuffed sausage look, with a bit of chunk sticking out.
Body con dresses/ swimsuits – they do pull you in. If you get a good fitting one, they can make it look like you’re a size smaller.
DRAWBACK – expensive. And you have to take them off eventually.
Cover ups – effective to swathe yourself in kaftans, pashminas, sarongs.
DRAWBACK – you still know what lies beneath!
Pills – DRAWBACK dangerous. Old style diet pills - basically speed, which led to heart palpitations & general bonkers behaviour. New style fat absorbers make you poo your pants!
Skinny Water – yeah, right. DRAWBACK - Absolute bollocks.
Faddy equipment – like the Hypoxi. You get into a diving suit and do a brief session of exercise. Allegedly it targets fat burning in certain areas… DRAWBACK … that’s a total myth. You can’t spot reduce fat. Very expensive. Slendertone etc DRAWBACK - expensive & feels like you’re being electrocuted. Better to do some real crunches on our PowerPlates – which have the science to back up the claims.
Gels, detox potions etc – beauty treatments can get away with murder. They can claim anything without any research to back it up. (NB Cheryl Cole advertising mascara with fake eyelashes and hair colour with fake hair.) DRAWBACK – They don’t work. No cream actually stops ageing. No wrap, cream or lotion can get rid of fat or cellulite. The best you can hope for is burning a few calories as you rub it into your skin.
